| dkozin's Full Review: AcerScan 620P Flatbed Scanner |
Acer 620P color flatbed scanner has parallel port interface. In 620, 600 means maximum optical resolution of 600dpi (dots per inch), which is about average now. P means parallel port interface. Acer also produces this model with SCSI (620S) and USB (620U) interfaces.
It also features true 36-bit color reproduction and 600x1200 dpi optical resolution.
I chose this model because:
1. I read the test results in computer magazines, where this model was the fastest 600-dpi scanner and provided best quality for such a low price.
2. I use Windows 95 (which doesn’t have any USB support), and my PC (in addition to that) doesn’t have USB ports.
3. My PC doesn’t have a SCSI card and I do not see much fun in getting one and wasting time installing it in my old PC.
4. I have a printer connected to the parallel port, but 620P, as all parallel port scanners, can be connected to PC with one cable, and to a printer with another one. So you can both scan and print without switching cables.
5. The price was very nice. In fact, the scanner cost about $25 after rebates.
6. I have good experience with other Acer products, for example my Acer 6206A CD-R/W drive (see my review of it)
The installation was easy and flawless (TWAIN driver for Windows). It was also easy to connect the scanner, printer and PC.
This scanner is:
1. Inexpensive.
2. Fast in both prescan and scanning mode. In fact, prescan is almost instantaneous (less than 6 seconds!).
3. Easy to install and use.
4. Picture quality is very good.
The scanner comes with 1 year warranty and generous software package.
One thing you have to remember:
Make sure though that you set your parallel port to ECP/EPP bi-directional mode (if you use this parallel port version, of course).
The only (small) drawback I can see:
The case design is a little too bulky. Again, it is not a big deal, taking into account all the pros of this scanner.
