The plusses: 1. At under $100, this scanner is a good buy for any household.
2. It copies photos very well, and the accompanying software allows a variety of formats for saving the photos (jpegs, tifs, etc.)
3. Its streamline profile fits nicely on a desktop.
The minusses: 1. If you are a complete novice to this type of equipment (as I was), it takes a long time to figure how to use the thing. The software provided (as cute as the little girl in the sunflower is) was difficult to understand. Its instruction booklet was not detailed enough for a first-time user, and only playing around with the unit and software for a long time (several weeks in my case) will provide any satisfaction--or even any ability to scan a picture.
2. If you're in a hurry, forget about it. This unit scans slowly (and noisily.) It takes several minutes to warm up, and until it does, it gives the scary error message that it can't seem to locate a scanner in your system anywhere.
3. For use as a copier (which was one of my main objectives) the unit scans very slowly, and unless you play around with the settings, copies of written pages come out blurred and unreadable.
4. It has to be placed on a desk or table-top. Because its cover is so long, in order to lift it to put your page inside, the unit can't go on a desk or computer work station shelf.
All that being said, it is a good unit for the money. Once I was able to figure out how to use it, I was able to scan photos and export them directly from the unit's software to send as e-mail or save on a diskette. I uploaded photo files to my Web site, and I am impressed with the way they look.
