Pros: Price, quality of scans. Good bundled photo software.
Cons: Speed, non intuitive, poorly documented software.
The Bottom Line: Probably better scanners are now on the market. Acer may have improved the readability of their documentation so it's probably worth checking out their latest scanners along with other brands.

I have nothing really to compare this scanner with because it is the first scanner I've owned. However, I have found the software to be non-intuitive and, consequently, difficult to use. Moreover, much of the documentation and the readme files are clearly written by someone whose first language is not English. Consequently, this leads to some ambiguity in the instructions. It has been difficult for me to use this scanner with third-party software, such as Corel Photopaint. However, when I do get it to work, I am perfectly satisfied with the image quality.
When my hard drive crashes and I had to reinstall the driver, I was unable to get satisfactory help from Acer's website.
The bundled ULead iPhoto Plus software was remarkably good, doing some stuff that Corel Photopaint and Adobe Photshop could not do.
When I next buy a scanner, I will stick with a more notable brand name such as Canon, HP or Epsom because I think that web support might be more reliable and documentation will be clearer.
