| lodestone's Full Review: AcerScan Prisa 640U Flatbed Scanner |
With my old Pentium 75, I used to have a cheap basic scanner. But when I purchased my newer Celeron machine, the proprietary interface card would not work with the new motherboard. I decided it was time for a new scanner.
Looking through the store advertisements, I saw a few parallel scanners advertised for about $40-50. I decided I did not want a parallel port scanner because my experience with parallel ports was that parallel devices usually slow the system down. I found an Acerscan Prisa 620U on sale at CompUSA for $80 with a $30 rebate. I decided to buy this one because it seemed to be the best scanner for the price (USB interface and high resolution).
Installation of this scanner was very easy. I simply connected it to the USB port, installed a driver, installed software, and was ready to go. I used this scanner for many educational and home projects and was pleased. The scanning speed is very fast, the quality is good as long as "High Quality" option is used, it does not slow the computer down, and the TWAIN driver (the program that actually controls the scanner) has many options and useful features.
About three months after I purchased the scanner, the mail-in rebate finally arrived. I personally hate rebates because they never seem to arrive or are very slow, but money is money, better late than never. I only have 2 minor complaints about this scanner. First, the AC adapter is huge. It measures about 2 inches wide, 3 inches long, and 2 inches deep and weighs about a third of a pound. I have it placed all the way to the right on my surge protector, and the outlet to the left of the adapter is partially blocked by the adapter and therefore useless. Second, the software included with this scanner like Ulead Photo Express (the programs, not the TWAIN driver) is not very useful. I personally use Paint Shop Pro and feel that PSP is 100% more useful, although I am a power user. The Ulead software included is probably fine for basic users, but not great for power users.
I recommend this product to just about anyone. It has basically all the features anyone could want, except a transparency adapter (which I have never needed and adds about $50 to the price of a scanner) and works very well.
