After purchasing a "cheap(er)" scanner which didn't have compatible drivers from for my new Windows 2000 OS, I settled on the Acer 640U for 3 reasons. First, it had drivers for Windows 2000. Also, the USB would make it easy to install (it was). Lastly, a recommendation from a passerby, who had been using his Acer scanner going on 3 years without a hitch.
Upon initial setup I experienced problems that I was able to troubleshoot to a bad driver, even though I had the latest Win2k drivers from the site. A few quick calls to customer support (LESS than 5 minute wait each time, on a Sunday afternoon), and the extremely friendly tech's pointed me in the direction of their Taiwan site, which had a newer version of the drivers (which worked like a charm). I was amazed at the quickness of the scanner (I have been using a SLOW parallel port scanner at work), and the quality that went with it. The scanner works GREAT under Windows 2000. The scanners small size lets it fit perfectly on my desk, though sometimes a larger scan area would be nice (it's 8.5"x11.7"). It came with quite a software bundle, though the only thing I tried using was Ulead Photoexpress, with no luck (Win2k issue, I believe).
This is a great inexpensive, easy to install, low priced scanner that would be great for almost anyone. The quality is good enough for all but the most scrutinizing. Its perfect for sending pictures to family and friends, or for scanning pictures for the web.
I found this scanner very easy to setup and use, those with minimal computer knowledge should have no trouble as long as they use the documentation included with the scanner (RTFM).
