Pros: At this this price, it's a great deal!
Cons: Doesn't scan legal documents
The Bottom Line: Heck, I would have bought the ScanButton software for $20. Another $30 bought me a much better scanner! This was an excellent deal!

| jkindybal's Full Review: AcerScan Prisa 640U Flatbed Scanner |
After many years of good service, I decided to replace our aged (3-pass, 300 dpi) Mustek Twain Scan Duo this Christmas with a scanner that would have a higher resolution. After checking out the clearance area at Egghead, I found the ACER 640U & a couple of Canon's. Fortunately I also discovered Epinions thru a hot-link and checked up on the 640U & was satisfied w/ the choice.
I then ordered it on 12-15 & received it on 12-22! Great service for Xmas delivery & none the worse for wear either.
The software that came with the unit are Mirascan 3.40(USB driver, ScanButton 3.0, FineReader ABBYY OCR, Adobe Active Share & Reader 3.2), Kai's PhotoSoap2 (touching-up & organizing), several multi-language poster size set-up charts (for all us male children who don't need/read directions) and Ulead Photo Express 3.0. UPDATE - Mirascan 4.02 upgrade is on ACER's Website.
Scan Button works nicely to integrate scanner w/ most any Twain compatible software that you already have installed (except for my aged and much beloved Aldus Photostyler 2.0 SE - won't see the scanner). My only possible gripe is that direct scan to printer only appears to print in black & white even if the original is in color. I MUST check into the documentation to see if that can be changed. UPDATE - Just had to change the default to print in color instead of black & white! AND, althought I can't scan from within Photostyler, I was able to add Photostyler to the Toolbar of apps that will receive a scanned image.
Our old scanner, by default, darkened & slightly yellowed all scanned images which could be a real pain at times. Thankfully, the 640U appears to be quite neutral &, even better, is quite a bit quicker. The images are much cleaner & clearer (less touch-up being necessary).
The only set-up problems were of my own making. Read the poster-sized-instructions-for-idiots! It can & did pay off for me.
At $36.99 + s/h (UPS ground about $50 total), the Acer 640U is a bargain! Set-up is easy and the included software is reasonably good. Didn't try the OCR software, so I'll reserve judgement on it.
Almost anyone could benefit from this product. However, I would not want to trust it in an office environment where it would be getting a LOT of daily usage, after all, it is a very inexpensive (CHEAP?) unit. And it will NOT scan a legal (8.5" x 14") document.
