| gadget_guru's Full Review: Canon CanoScan FB620U Flatbed Scanner |
After returning the Mustek Plug-n-Scan which was supposed to be my Christmas Present, I ended up deciding to give the Canon scanner "Canoscan 620U", a try. I decided to buy it, since it was fairly a new product to the market and not much was written in the form of reviews. Also it looked sleek and thin on the Staple's display shelf. The cost was around $129, but it came with a $30 mail-in-rebate (the check should be in the mail by now:)
I did not expect too much, but was surprised by the quality of the pictures that were scanned. There is a definite difference in quality between the pictures scanned on a $350 HP scanner and this. But since the quality is pretty good for scanning some family pictures I decided to keep the Canoscan and pocket the difference of $250 or spend it on some other gadget.
The product comes with Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home edition software, that lets you manipulate the pictures easily for people with some experience. For a novice, a few hours of trying out different features would definitely help in producing a quality picture.
One other thing, if your computer does not have have USB port Do Not buy a FB620U. The "U" at the end of the model usually stands for USB port connection, "P" for parallel and "S" for Serial connection. Also the "U" models are slightly higher priced since they are expected to download at higher speed. The Scanning software has a preview at which time it passes through the full flat bed, then with the autocrop feature, you can select just the area you want to scan. This makes the real scanning little bit faster.
Overall, I would say it is the best buy for $99 and worth it.
