| veda815's Full Review: Canon CanoScan N650U Flatbed Scanner |
After getting a new computer system that wouldn't support my four year old scanner I decided it was time to start looking for a new one. I didn't do any research ahead of time, I was just looking for an inexpensive USB scanner that would run on Windows 2000. I didn't want to spend more than $100 so I figured I would end of with a mediocre no name brand scanner.
When I got to the local Best Buy, I saw this cute little Cannon scanner on the shelf. It was 1.3" inches thick and weighed 3.1 lbs. I assumed that since it was so small and a well-known brand it must be a couple hundred dollars. When I got a closer look, I saw that the price tag said $99. This was the perfect scanner for me. I threw the lightweight box over my shoulder and proceeded to the check-out.
Specifications
Optical Scanning Resolution: 600 x 1200 dpi
Maximum Resolution: 9600 x 9600 dpi
Maximum Bit Depth: 42 - bit color
Document Size: 8.5" x 11.7"
USB Interface
Runs on Win98, Win2000, and Mac OS 8.5 and later
Software
The software that comes with the scanner is all right, but not the best. It comes with Arcsoft Photobase and Arcsoft Photo Studio 2000. It works well if you're just scanning pictures, resizing and saving them - but I would recommend using other software if you want to do a lot of editing.
Quality and Speed
The picture quality is great. Much better quality than my four-year-old scanner. You'd think the pictures came from a much more expensive scanner. The scanner is also very fast. I was impressed at how quick it pulled my pictures up.
This is definitely a great scanner for the home computer user, as well as for professionals. I've yet to have any sort of problem or complaint about the scanner. It's small - doesn't take up a lot of space, does its job well, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
