| proudarmywife's Full Review: Canon CanoScan N650U Flatbed Scanner |
Living overseas with family stateside makes for sharing information and updates kind of difficult. I didn't want to have our pictures developed, and then pay another 5 dollars everytime to get the photos on disc so that I could send photos of our kids via email to my parents. This was when I decided to get a scanner.
We had a scanner once before, and I hated it. It was rather bulky, and it became what I affectionately call a "port hog." Meaning, that because I had to plug it into the CPU, and the printer into the Scanner, (per the instructions) it made it hard when I wanted to scan an item then print- basically I had to hook it up to scan, and then hook the printer straight to the CPU to print, so I was very cautious about buying another one.
We went to our post exchange store, and found the CanoScan N650U. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. First, it is incredibly compact, just about an inch high, and about 3 pounds. Then there was the price, only $99.00. I knew that for that price, that it was probably a toy model, and wasn't going to have any real scanning ability. I was wrong. This scanner boasts 600x1200 DPI resolution, with a maximum of 9600x9600. It is 42-Bit- meaning you get millions upon millions of colors.
We brought it home, and installation and hook-up were a breeze. What is great, is that there is only one cord! The USB cord is also the power cord, so transporting it from one computer to another is also a snap. It comes with a tri-fold glossy starting guide, with snapshots of each part of the installation process so there is really no way to go wrong. You don't have to go through any software program to access the scanner. Just put your item under the lid, and press the button, and the scanner screen pops up and you are ready to go! I used Paint Shop Pro for graphics editing, and have really loved being able to import from the scanner with that as well. It comes with a one year warranty, and is compatible with Macs and PC's.
My first scan was a family photo- I decided to keep the resolution kind of high, to test the timing of the scanner. You first preview the scan. From there, you can flip it around if you scanned upside down, and even resize the photo. This is an effective tool when you are sending photos online, as it shows you the file size right there on the scan screen.
The first thing I noticed, was that it "hummed" rather quietly, and even with a high resolution color photograph, it didn't take long at all to get it from the scanner, to my email.
I have to say- my first scanner experience was a bust, but this time around, I can honestly say, I love my scanner!
