The Visioneer 7600 USB is a unremarkable scanner and even seems kinda plain! ;)
It looks like any ordinary desktop scanner has room for nearly 11x17 paper and has exceptional scan quality. The only remarkable thing about the scanner is it's ease of use but this is a Great Asset to have. The 7600 has plug and play setup in minutes, it has big easy to read buttons, Scan, Fax, Copy and Other which can be custom programmed to scan in any document to your pre chosen program. These buttons work remarkably well and are easy to understand.
Setup is a breeze I plugged in my USB cable to my USB port and 'Katy' (My Compaq) instantly recognized and installed the drivers for the Visioneer. The Scanner worked the first time right out of the box. Oh but don't forget to unlock the scanner bar on the bottom of the unit as the directions state. This locked state protects the scanner during shipping but was extremely annoying in the low end units I've seen with poorly labeled positions and the lack of directions on how to setup the scanner. However on the Visioneer it was easy to unlock because of the clearly labeled Locked and Unlocked positions unlike some other models and because the tape they used across the unit to keep you from opening the scanner had BIG instructions to Unlock the Scanner on the bottom. This was a great idea by Visioneer and is a much better solution than the non solutions in the competitor's scanners I've seen.
The Scanner stays on the entire time your Computer is on and has built in software that will do simple photo editing but nothing major. The built in software with my Visioneer is a little blocky. And actually won't work if you actually try to scan from the computer itself. This is the only time the device doesn't work is if you run the Visioneer software from the Windows start menu. When you bring up the software and choose to acquire or scan the software gives an error stating there is no TWAIN compatible device available. If I click on the Handy One Touch scanner icon in my systray the One Touch buttons come up on Screen and work Great, also if you use the One Touch buttons on the scanner itself the scanner works perfectly. Of Course the One Touch buttons on the screen or the Scanner are the easiest way to scan anyway. I have consistently received excellent scans from this scanner.
A note about DPI (Dots per Inch) This DPI thing is a little confusing too for those new to scanners or printers. In fact I really thought the DPI was a very important but in reality I found that 300dpi is sufficient for most of my Color Photos. The Visioneer scans by default in 100 dpi mode but can be software compressed to something like 1200 dpi. I have used some higher modes 100dpi, 300dpi and 600dpi. What I found is that for my general web publishing and photos for digital only 100dpi was fine. If I wanted a hard copy Photo Realistic print out then I choose the 300dpi mode, but unless you look really closely my HP 882C prints both 100dpi scans & 300dpi scans nearly identically to my untrained eye. I choose Best printer quality and print on HP Premium Photo Paper for both pictures.
I also looked at other scanners it it's class, but knowing the lack of USB capability with other HP products I was hesitant to go with the HP Scanner plus the HP was about $50 dollars more retail than the Visioneer.
Overall for the money the Visioneer is a very good scanner to buy, its Easy to use, Simple to setup, and has Good Picture Quality. Of course the most important thing about any Computer peripheral is that It Works and does the job it was designed to do. And without a doubt the Visioneer One Touch 7600 USB meets and exceeds expectations on this key point. I'm very happy with the Visioneer One Touch 7600 USB and think its a great scanner for the 'Newbie' or 'Techie'
The only ones who could be disappointed by this scanner would be professional graphic design firms for the lack of dpi depth approximately up to 600x600 dpi actual.
