| pokemonsick's Full Review: Visioneer OneTouch 7600 Flatbed Scanner |
Santa must have thought I was pretty good this year because he brought a scanner to our house! We received a Visioneer 7600 USB Series. First let me tell you that you won't find much technical computer mumbo jumbo in this review! I'm basically a computer moron, but I will try to include all the basics.
What is needed to use this particular scanner are an IBM or 100% compatible pentium computer, microsoft windows 98, an available USB port on your computer, 16 mb or more of available ram, 35 mb of hard disk space, a VGA or SVGA monitor with as many colors as possible and with resolution set to at least 800 x 600 pixels, and a cd rom drive. Whew, I got most of the technical stuff out of the way!
Before you can connect your scanner, you need to install the paperport software through the disk provided or your scanner will not run properly. This is an easy step by step process you are talked through. You are even prompted when it is time to connect the scanner!
The scanner itself consists of a cover, a document pad, glass, reference frame in both inches and centimeters along the border of the frame, a 5 button panel consisting of scan, copy/print, fax, custom, and stop/cancel, a usb port, and a power jack. The scanner comes with the power cord and the usb cable.
One drawback to this model is that there is no on/off switch. If it is connected to a surge strip with the rest of your computer, when the computer is on so is it and vise versa. Mine plugs directly into the wall, so it is always on unless I unplug it.
You know you have correctly installed it if a little icon appears in your tray resembling a scanner and there is no x through it. If there is the manual gives you some things to try to correct the problem. We had no problem, it was really pretty easy.
Once you are all hooked up there are 3 ways to use it. You can use the buttons on the scanner itself, scan from the screen by clicking the icon in the tray, or scan from the paperport software by clicking on the twain icon.
The buttons are preconfigured, but if you know what you are doing you can customize the settings (not a chance here!)
At this time I have only sent one scanned document out (a picture) and the receiver reported the quality to be pretty darn good for a relatively inexpensive model. I sent it by scanning the document, saving it to my download manager, and adding it as an attachment to an e-mail. Not too bad for someone who had never done an attachment of any kind before, so you can see this one is not too hard to use!
Was I able to install the software? Yes! Was I able to connect the scanner error free? Yes! Was I able to operate it? Yes! Did someone receive the finished product and report the quality as being high? Yes! Therefore, I can easily recommend this scanner to you!
