| radio1_mike's Full Review: Altec Lansing ACS 44 |
There are two things to consider when purchasing speakers of any kind: price and sound quality. Both, in my mind, are equally important. What's the point in spending over your budget to get great sound, or spending within your budget to get bad sound.
Now if there one thing I appreciate in life, it's music; technically speaking- sound quality. I had wanted to purchase a satellite sound system for my computer because they sound wonderful and I am a spaz about these things anyway.
The Altec ACS-44 hits both marks superbly. Before purchasing this setup I had a pair of Yamaha MST-M8 speakers; which I am listening to right now at work. They sound great. But, the ACS-44s blows them away.
First, performance: Crisp highs, put in Vivaldi and it sparkles, like it would on your home stereo. Full midrange, has a deep rich sound which compliments any type music or sound effects. Excellent bass, tight and thumping for when you want to play some hip hop or Led Zep on your computer. I compared these speakers to Yamaha's satellites systems, Cambridge Soundworks and Altec's own ACS-45 (the step up from these). For my ears, there was no comparison. Cambridge Soundworks ($100) sounded nice, but they did not have great midrange sound. Yamaha's MST-25 (I believe) which I wanted to buy, did not have great bass. Even Altec's ACS-45 did sound nearly as well as the other three!
Second, price: Great price, I paid $70 at Best Buy, while Yamaha cost $80, Cambridge SW cost $100 and Altec's ACS-45 cost $100 also. I would have paid $80-$100 for the ACS-44, they sound that good.
Third, setup and control: Pretty easy, master base volume is on subwoofer, which has nice long cords so you can hide it easily. Two input channels on subwoofer, which is standard. The satellite speakers are well made, solid, small and have adjustable focusing angles. The on-switch is also on the right speaker; which also serves as the master volume control, also there is a power LED right next to the switch.
I would recommend these speakers to anyone except for people who want a 4 speaker (Surround Sound) setup.
