| skunkworks's Full Review: Cambridge Soundworks C1MWBWEE 2 Speakers |
The Cambridge Soundworks PCWorks are probably the best set of speakers under $50. At www.shopper.com, you can purchase them for a paltry $34. The sound pumping from these speakers, however, is worth much more than $34.
These speakers come with a subwoofer and two tweeters, all controlled by a very VERY convenient volume controller that puts control near my hands. I never have to bend over to lower the volume when answering a phone. Setup is simple: Plug in the jack to your sound card, which goes through the volume controller and is jacked into the subwoofer. The two tweeters are connected to the subwoofer. One complaint that I have with these speakers is the speaker wire that connects the tweeters to the subwoofer. The wires are right by my feet (since I placed the subwoofer there) and the connection to the subwoofer (therefore to the audio itself) is sometimes disrupted when the cables are not held tightly enough. My wires have been chewed up and will soon need to be cut and resoldered since the ends of the wires have all but fallen off. This won't be a problem if you stay away from yanking and jerking these cords.
The sound quality is excellent. When I first purchased these speakers (about two years ago for $70), the only speakers better were the more expensive models (Soundworks and Microworks). Since then, better speakers have emerged, with options for surround sound and Dolby Digital and whatnot. However, every time I go to Best Buy or Fry's Electronics and go to the speaker display, it is still hard to find a set of speakers under $100 that sound as good as these speakers do. I've recommended these to friends looking for something cheap to play MP3's on, and they're all very satisfied.
If you don't want to break the bank, you can easily find these excellent-sounding speakers for under $50. They are inexpensive, and there are prettier and better sounding speakers with better technology, but this is the best bread-and-butter speaker/woofer combo for the price.
