I got tired of my old cheap speakers, so I went out and bought these for myself. I got them for $40 at Best Buy. I bought them because I listen to a lot of music, and my old speakers weren't cutting it.
The subwoofer on this thing can move some serious air. At reasonable volumes, the bass is very tight and well defined. However, it's a little unbalanced; sometimes the subwoofer overpowers the tweaters, sometimes it's not loud enough. The subwoofer has a volume knob to compensate for this. The subwoofer gets boomy at loud volumes though. But it can get loud! I'm afraid to turn the volume control past 75% because it starts shaking very violently. The tweaters are very nice, they do a very good job for the high end. However, the high end isn't as clear as with my home stereo; it sounds slightly "muddled". Note, I'm not an audiophile, so this is just what I think :). But all this really isn't noticeable at all. This is the best speaker system I have heard for under $50 - the bass is punchy, the tweaters are very accurate, and it can get pretty loud. Especially the subwoofer, I haven't heard a better sub in speakers under $50.
This has a few problems though. First, the power button is in a hard to reach location - it's behind the sub. Also, the wires are directly connected to the tweaters; you can't replace the wire. Also, the tweaters use normal speaker wire instead of a more common miniplug. This makes it a little harder to insert into the subwoofer, but I don't mind. You won't have to worry about short wires with this system, I had plenty left over that had to wrap in bundles. A funny thing with my particular area is that the speakers pick up interference from radio stations. I was able to eliminate most of it my moving cables around.
The tech support is very good, although it's slow. I sent them a message about my interference problems, and about 2 weeks later they responded with helpful suggestions.
To sum up, if you want speakers under $50, BUY THESE! You won't be disappointed.
