| jeffpresto's Full Review: JBL Media 2000 |
When the JBL name pops up, what comes to your mind? I think of high-grade but affordable audio systems, and that's exactly what you get with the Media System 2000.
I picked this sub/sat system up at OfficeMax for the very reasonable price of $120. Upon opening the box, I was pleased to see the neatly packed contents. Included is two satelite speakers, a subwoofer, more cables than I care to need, and an instruction manual. The manual provides detailed and easy-to-read instructions on setting up the speakers, which took about 10 - 15 minutes all together.
The speakers themselves are extremely well-built, using heavy-plastic cabinates and sturdy metal grills. You can tell that these things will not give out after a few years of use, which is a very good thing indeed. They are also styled very nicely when compared to other media speakers. They have a metalic-looking black finish, although JBL insists they are "dark bronze". Whatever the case may be, they are very eye-pleasing.
JBL speakers are known for their warm, bright sound, and these speakers are no exeption. Although relatively small, they produce lively, bright sound that is not harsh and boomy like most computer speakers. The highs are conveyed much better than I imagined they would be considering the lack of tweeters. The full-range speakers of the satelites are amazing, producing not only glimmering highs, but warm, smooth mids that add to an overall pleasent sound.
The subwoofer of the setup was also a surprise. It was not overbearing and boomy as most subs are. It was smooth and precise, blending in with the satelites wonderfully. However, turning the volume knob past the 3/4 mark causes the 4" subwoofer driver to distort, pusing too much air from the port, which produces a whispy sound. This system was not meant to have parties with.
All in all, I really think this system lives up to the JBL name, which is no easy task. If you're tired of computer speakers that lack the finesse and fidelity of home speakers, this may be the setup you're looking for.
