| Phtong's Full Review: Logitech SoundMan X1 2 Speakers |
I purchased the Soundman X1 for a used Macintosh computer I had bought (I couldn't stand that internal speaker). I was told that they would be better than the Labtec LCS-2414 that I had on a previous system, which I wasn't too fond of either.
Sadly, I found that the Logitech were somewhat worse than the Labtecs, and much worse than the Altec Lansings I wave on my gaming system (Although I cannot compare them to the Altecs, since they cost almost twice as much)
Here's what I thought of them:
The good:
-Compact design lets you place the sub on your desktop without too much clutter.
-Subwoofer is shielded, so it can be placed near your monitor.
-Price: at 57$ CDN (about 38$US), they're quite cheap
The bad:
-The subwoofer has a good punch but cannot sustain low-frequencies, even with the bass control at maximum. I noticed this during a Yanni track where there are sustained low piano notes. They're barely audible on the Logitecs, but almost any other system with a sub reproduces them decently.
-The mid-range reproduction seems to be somewhat lacking. The highs and lows aren't bad, but there is a range in between where sound is not extremely well defined.
In conclusion:
this seems to be a good entry-level set for gaming, where you are looking for subwoofer punch and clear highs. I would not want to use them to play music. which is what I mostly do with these. I will be returning them to Staples (they have a 10-day satisfaction guarantee) and I will put down more money to get something better.
Final word: You get what you pay for.
