| webular's Full Review: Logitech SoundMan X1 2 Speakers |
The Logitech Soundman X1 sound great (okay, probably not the best speakers in the world, but for free, who argues?).
I needed new speakers, as my old speakers (Labtech speakers) were causing some issues with my new monitor (EMI or RFI interference), the right speaker was getting a bit of static, and they just weren’t cutting the sound barrier anymore. So, with this in mind, I went out in search of new speakers. I did a little reviewing on the internet (reading other reviews on Epinions, checking prices, and checking specs on speakers). I came up with the conclusion that for what I was looking for, looking to spend, and generally the best bang for buck, I decided on the Logitech Soundman X1 speakers.
The speakers offer 2 small satellite speakers (very slim design makes it easy to fit onto almost any desk), and a sub-woofer (which is a big step up from my 2 speaker setup from before, that offered almost no bass). The speakers are rated at 25 Watts RMS and have a frequency response of 38 Hz – 20 kHz. This offered a decent range for the price, which made it the prime candidate for purchasing.
So, with the product and price in mind, I set off to the nearest Staples store to purchase my new speakers. I got the speakers home, had no problems setting them up, and they sounded great, for about 2 hours. Then it happened, the left speaker cut out on me. At first it was few and far in between, and then it began to happen more often.
Finally, with the left speaker being such a hassle, I take the speakers back to Staples to return them, and find out the speakers are on sale, with a mail-in rebate, making them free (after rebate). How could I go wrong? I returned the speakers, re-purchased them (at $10 less), and sent off my rebate for $40 (making the speakers free).
The new set of speakers sound great, have given me no problems (and it’s been 3 days with a lot of music played on them in the last 3 days).
These speakers are basically great for anyone who is looking to purchase an affordable set of speakers that still want to listen to music, play games, etc. and still have a decent sound quality. These speakers are not for someone who expects total surround sound on their new 3D game, or someone who wants the latest, greatest, best speakers on the market.
Most of what I use my speakers for is background music while I surf the internet, program (hours of programming requires good background music, played thru decent speakers), and the occasional game.
The only other problems that I have with the speakers are the volume knob feels flimsy, but after inspection on the original set, the knob feels a little wobbly, but actually isn't going anywhere. And the fact that there is no treble or bass control on the satellite speaker.
My old speakers had a few options that would be nice if were included in these speakers, but I guess you can't get everything. Features that should have been added:
Treble/Bass Control on the Satellite
Power On/Off Button (although the auto-on/off isn't bad)
Headphone jack over-ride should have been on the satellite (located on the Sub-woofer, which is on my floor, not on the desk).
Other than that, they are a great set of speakers, especially for the cost of a stamp!
