The Midiland S2/4100, although an aging set of 3-piece speakers, is still a gem. If you've only ever had those cheap chunks of plastic that come with your computer as "speakers" you will be blown away by the power and quality of these babies. The set's specs (taken from the skimpy manual) are as follows:
100 watt RMS integrated power amplifier
8" dual voice coil subwoofer
4.5" two-way satellite speakers
internal/external remote control module (fits perfectly in a drive bay)
2 separate stereo inputs (for hooking up your tv, etc)
neodymium magnets
complete magnetic/video shielding
3DSP (three-dimensional stereo processing)
. . . (there's more but it isn't really all that important)
as you can see these are some fairly impressive specs. They might not immediately blow you away, but upon setting up the speakers you will no doubt be impressed. The speakers use high performance cables which looks like something you'd expect to find in a high-end home audio system, and the control module has enough cord to place it comfortably any place on your desktop. Furthermore, this set was a steal of a deal at about $250 when i bought it this summer.
There are only a couple disadvantages to this speaker set. First of all, it is only a 3-piece set and nowadays it seems as if surround sound is everywhere with the new Dolby 5.0-compliant Klipsch's on the market. Second, for those of you with a keen ear, when the speakers are not shaking the walls with heavy bass from the subwoofer, or rattling your teeth in your skull with the sound of gunfire from your game of Quake, you might detect a slight hissing which is a product of the DSP circuitry. One final note is that the 3DSP option is quite useless as it seems only to enhance certain high frequencies and does not add to the gameplay experience as far as i could tell.
