| Shnit's Full Review: Level 9 Sound Designs MM-1000 2 Speakers |
For years, I had my bookshelf stereo system to supply all my computer sound needs. I mean, I'm talking about a 150 watt system here with a great subwoofer! It was awesome, until it broke down on me....so I was in the market to buy a speaker system, since I don't have the cash to buy another decent bookshelf setup.
I didn't think any set of speakers would ever match up to what I had before. I tried some from Sony, Altec and Creative, and they all fell short of the quality of sound I expected... I was disappointed and thought I had to wait a few months to save up for another bookshelf.
It was not until I came across the Monsoon MM-1000's that changed everything. When I heard these things, I fell in love. Not only because they look great (love the flat look), but because it sounds even better! The sounds coming from the speakers were VERY clear and crisp. The high tones were great. Voices came out sounding like the person is right in front of me! And the bass.....well thanks to the 25 watt subwoofer, the bass was very deep and strong. I played the THX Bass Tester MP3 and I was very impressed. There was no distortion, unless I cranked up the volume to the very limits, and even then, I believe the distortions came from the HEAVY vibrations on my desk and walls.
The immersive sensation from the Monsoon's also deserves a little mention. When I play Quake 3 Arena, the sound effects seem to be all around me. In fact, playing this game with these speakers were much better than my bookself system. Even with machine guns blaring, rockets and bullets flying by and shotguns going off, I can make out each sound clearly and with no distortions.
All-in-all, I believe that the MM-1000 is a great speaker setup.... for a computer. The reason I say that way is because the speakers are very directional, which could be a blessing or a disadvantage, depending on how you use them. Directional speakers are fantastic, if you stay in one place (for example, in front of your computer). This way, the sounds could travel directly into your ears they way they are meant to sound, without over-lapping sound waves typical of conventional cone-type speakers, which can reduce clarity and "crispness". However, if you are going to use these speakers to satisfy your music needs in your large living room, well, I would think again. You would do better with more conventional speakers.
But since these speakers are made more specifically for computer use, I would highly recommend it (unless you constantly bob your head back and forth while using your computer, in which case I would suggest you go see a doctor).
A great product!
