Introduction
I realized that these flat panel speakers would be pretty. When I received them, I unwrapped them and thought that they looked so cool that I really didn’t care what they sounded like. I’ve had my fair share of computer speakers and I really never thought much of any of them. I always thought that computer sound was just that: computer sound. I am very pleased to say that I was completely wrong.
Monsoon has done something very good
I love the look of my Monsoon speakers, but I really love the sound. I had these speaker near a set of “regular” computer speakers so I was able to do a series of comparisons with different music and sounds. The difference in sound was astounding. The clarity of these speakers is downright remarkable for the price.
No, I would not throw out my stereo system just yet, but it was wonderful for everything that I think to play to audition them. The speakers handled the spatial feeling of games, especially considering that my other speakers had surround speakers. The sense of sound was a wonderful surprise. Music has a clarity that I have never heard from my computer. I simply haven’t used my stereo for music since I’ve plugged in the Monsoons.
Turn it up!
If I have a reservation, it would be that the speakers do a wonderful job with a strong, clear sound but do not have the capability to make the windows rattle. For me, this is not a factor. I just don’t need the distortion and pain associated with really loud sounds, but this is probably a purchasing consideration for some. It is worth noting. On certain media, it is not uncommon for me to roll the toggle to the loudest volume, with the understanding that more volume controls are located on the subwoofer.
Controls
Another feature worth noting in your consideration is that the power button and other controls are located on the subwoofer. There is a mute/volume control that you may place on your desktop or other location that offers me the control that I need, but it does not offer the number of controls that some of the other speakers offer.
For example, to turn the speaker off, you will want the subwoofer located in an accessible location so that you can reach it. Similarly, adjusting the bass and treble levels would require a similar action. I just leave the silly thing on and I don’t fool with the bass/treble so it doesn’t bother me. I just wanted to let you know if this a factor for you.
Conclusion
I absolutely love the Monsoon speakers and I would buy another set in a second. They have a wonderful sound and all of the control that I need. If you need more controls or eardrum bursting volume, you may want to consider your options.
