| frede's Full Review: Yamaha YST-MS50 Speaker System |
My living room stereo is vintage Fisher (only 50 watts total) with large 3-way speakers which have 16" bass reflex woofers. They move an unbelievable amount of air (blow out a bic at 3 feet) and at 25% volume threaten windows in a large room. In addition to pure power, these components are smooth as silk harmonically and can deliver sound throughout the volume spectrum without affecting "body". I come from a generation that believes "it ain't loud enough until you can feel it"; just like the old Maxell classic photograph. At higher levels the sound just gets louder with no distortion or crackling whatsoever (more things in the room rattle though). This is a true "lease buster" system. Fair or not, this is my benchmark for sound equipment.
My computer came with Altec ACS90's which are nice little speakers to include with a computer package. From time to time, I'd thought of routing the computer into the Fisher, but that didn't seem of any advantage so I simply used what I had with no particular interest in upgrading.
It was just recently I noticed a Yamaha YST-MS50 system being demonstrated at a CompUSA store. Well, they caught my ear immediately, so I waited until the sales guy was finished with the other customers and I rung them out a bit. A week later I bought a set, not just for the computer, but for anything with a 3.5mm jack. Installation was a 5 minute activity even though the hook up doesn't seem logical to me. There was no software provided or needed as the set just plugs into your sound card. My computer rests on a banquet table with plenty of room, even for the subwoofer. It sits just to the right of my monitor and is not as directional as the satellite speakers. The internal shielding is apparently effective as there is no monitor distortion.
The point to this is that I have a semi-trained ear and I like the Yamaha's very much. Two features which most impressed me are the smoothness and the speakers ability to deliver really nice sound at medium and low levels. Did I mention bass? Well you *can* "feel" it and it isn't muddy. Throughout the volume range, sound balance between the speakers stays the same. You're going to get sound more expensive desktop speakers couldn't produce even if they knew it was there.
