I bought these after reading online user reviews. My cost was $126 Cdn.
I listened to several models before taking a chance on these. Taking a chance because no one had them in the city and they had to be special ordered. Of the Altecs, Monsoons and other models I listened to that ranged from $50 Cdn to $200 Cdn, the Yamaha YSTMS50's offered the best performance and value.
I ordered the system in black. The desktop monitors are well made, fairly compact and visually pleasing. The front panel headphone jack was a strong selling point; every other system I looked at lacked it for some incomprehensible reason. The main volume control is small and relatively difficult to use. It seems better suited to a child's hand.
The subwoofer is fairly large with a front firing port and driver, and a front mounted bass volume control. The rear positioned power button makes it difficult to turn the sub off, so it's probably best to leave it on all the time.
Hook up was straight forward. The sound is well balanced and fairly smooth. Monitor/subwoofer integration is good without any glaring holes or bumps. The system can produce very high sound levels with lots of slam. I could turned it up to very loud levels with little strain. In fact I haven't been able to stress them - my wife complains whenever I try! Bass is powerful and satisfying. Midrange is superior to other models I auditioned, many of which seemed to have no midrange to speak of - just a total midrange suckout. The highs have some problems, though. They are extended but somewhat bright and a little rough. Still, they beat out everything except maybe the Monsoons.
I am satisfied with these speakers and recommend them as an excellent 2 channel/subwoofer multimedia system.
