Pros: Amazing quality for the cost, perfect for casual computer sound listeners
Cons: If you have heavy sound needs the MST8's might be a bit too low-scale and weak

| dj-nellie's Full Review: Yamaha YST-M8 2 Speakers |
Yes, it IS possible to get a decent set of speakers for around $35. Simply put, for the money, there is no better pair of mid-level speakers that you can buy than the Yamaha YSTM8. It doesn't come with any frills or shiny bells (or even a subwoofer), but if you're just looking for a reasonably-priced and adequate set of speakers, look no further.
I bought this set of speakers for my new computer because, although I'm something of an audiophile, I don't have heavy demands for the music that I want to listen to on my computer. Personally, I'd rather listen to my music on my discman or a stereo system. What I wanted from my speakers was a cheap and durable set that would produce clear, full sound. And I'd say that these Yamahas have fulfilled that role.
They can take a beating (I've dropped and knocked them over several times), and they can even come close to "jamming" when you want them to. Turn them up on your favorite song and you may be surprised with how well these fairly small and scaled-down speakers handle. The only adjustable knob (aside from volume) is "Tone", which I don't find that useful. I usually just leave it at about 75% and get decent sound on most songs. My only problem has been on the older set of the speakers (I own 2 pairs); the right speaker sometimes goes out and I have to re-plug the cord back into the cpu for the sound to come back. Aside from that, however, there have been no problems.
If you listen to music or sound files on your computer with regularity, and would like the most powerful and clear sound possible, I'd say to pass on the YSTM8's and go for a more upscale Yamaha. But if you just listen to the occasional song or webcast on your computer, the YSTM8's are MORE than adequate. I'm continually surprised with the quality of the sound they produce, especially for the price. Add a subwoofer if you like, and you'll have a mid-level sound system at a very reasonable cost.
