Deep bass! Sizzling highs! Low price! What more could you possible want? How about accurate sound? How about hearing the music as it was intended?
The problem...
These aren't miracle speakers. Like all separates at this price, they're just an ear candy machine: pump the bass, boost the highs and wait for the squeals of delight. But good accurate sound handles the entire sonic range, including that "warmth" and "body" frequency zone: 70-700Hz.
This speaker set is simply not designed to play frequencies between 70 and 700Hz. It makes sense: The woofer is tuned for depth and power while the separates are too small to produce anything below 1K without noticeable distortion.
The solution...
If you're the type who always makes your equalizer "smile" (boost the highs and lows and cut everything in the middle), then put on pants, run out the door and purchase these immediately.
If, however, you want crisp highs, deep bass AND you have an appreciation for the entire musical spectrum, you can feel comfortable purchasing these speakers as long as...
1) Your soundcard or mp3 player has an EQ. (Winamp does.)
2) You can tolerate occasional distortion when you turn up the speakers.
Since you're tricking the speakers into pumping out those mid-low freqs, you won't be able to "pump up the volume". But for those pump-it-up moments, just bypass the EQ and you'll be bathed in the best bass and treble $50 can buy.
