If you have boxes and boxes of home movie video tapes sitting in the basement rutting away. You would think of a way to transfer them to a more permanent form, such as CD/DVD. Until recent I have found such a product, which is call UBS Instant DVD by ADS.
This is a hardware devise which digitizes the analog signal from the VHS/cancorder player and sends it to the computer as MPEG 1(VCD) of MPEG 2(DVD/SVCD) format and which can be burn to CD-R or DVD via burner software.
So far I have converted about 50% of all my tapes in to SVCDs, each SVCD CD-R can hold about 45 to 50 mins of near DVD quality video.
I have found the included MyDVD software useless. since the resulting miniDVD on CD-R can only be played on computer CD-Rom drive.
The software package also lacking software necessary to authur VCD/SVCD,and CDimaging software, which is needed to creat VCD/SVCD playable at stand alone DVD players.
Fortunately I was able to obtain VCDimage from the web and also bought a copy of Fireburner (a VCD/SVCD image burner)to burn the SVCD image file( cue/bin files) which I have created to CD-Rs.
Initally I have found the audio syn problem with VCDs which I have created. This problem has since then resolved after I downloaded and upgraded the capturing software.
A lot of info about VCD/SVCD creation can be obtain from VCDhelp.com
If you have some digital video experience, you should find this is a very nice piece of hardware,it has very low computer hardware requirement.
