| BrianneG's Full Review: AT&T@home |
I admit it openly. I am addicted to the internet. The first thing I do in the morning is wake up my monitor, check my e-mail, and check my epinions balance. I constantly have my Winamp playing the MP3s that I've downloaded with Napster. And I had the misfortune of getting mixed up in the pay-to-surf racket and a number of "rewards" programs. And none of this would ever have been possible without my cable modem.
They're always running a special!
AT&T @home service is a very dependable service that I've never had a problem with. I signed up for this service during a free installation, six month @ $19.95 special, but right now the special is free installation and two months free. The regular charge for the modem is $39.95, but I believe the service is totally worth the money.
Customer Service with a :)
I recently purchased a new computer on Egghead.com. This computer came with a network card, so I didn't have to switch out my old one from my other computer. Unfortunately, I had a lot of problems trying to get the cable modem to work with my new computer. So, luckily I didn't have a problem with the modem so I dialed up my university's server and found the AT&T @home website. When you go to the customer service area, there's an option to chat with a customer service agent. This is an excellent service. I only had to wait for fifteen minutes to talk to someone and it was a lot better than sitting on hold that whole time. In fact, I spent the time surfing around epinions. When the representative was ready to talk to me a box popped up to let me know. "Carl" walked me through the process of fixing my computer name and IP settings and when I restarted, suddenly I was on the internet. I really like this "chat" option, it's so much easier to do something on your computer if you can read it, rather than try to understand someone on the phone.
Advantages
Another advantage with the AT&T service is that you get a static IP address and for only $5 per address you can buy more. When I subscribed to Roadrunner service through Mediaone in Los Angeles they don't even give you this option. This makes networking slightly more difficult within your household.
Browser annoyances
One disadvantage to the AT&T service is that the only browser they support is their own browser which is basically Internet Explorer 5 revamped to promote themselves. I personally prefer to use the general IE5 but if I have any problems with it, I won't be able to ask customer support for help. When you install the software, it automatically changes your start page too, but that's easy enough to fix.
So...
All in all, I say this is an excellent service. I really like being able to be on the internet all the time, and living in an apartment complex it's just easier for me to use a cable modem instead of DSL. Plus, with this introductory special, it was such a bargain. I got a great deal, and I highly recommend using this service to anyone who is bothered by their slow ISP.
