| pstans's Full Review: AT&T@home |
I started up with AT&T @Home about 3 months ago, and I have to say I really love it. I work at a University and we, like most University's have a T1 connection to the Internet. @home cable connection beats the T1 connection hands down.
AT&T @Home still has it's flaws, like just about anything or company that is in it's infancy. AT&T is not of course, but the @Home service is still pretty new. It just started up in my community less than a year ago. They have already made large strides of improvement since they started.
With my 56K v.90 modem, I would normally connect at 49K fairly regular. I do web site creation and management for an Athletic Tour company here in town as a second job, and trying to FTP to and from their site would take a very long time. With my new cable modem, I do not have to "dial up" to get connected, because with a cable modem, you are connected to the internet as long as your computer is turned on. That in itself saves a lot of time. And the speed of the cable modem for downloads, instead of around 33Kbps(kilobits per second) to 48Kbps, I usually do around 3600kbps and up to 6000kbps depending on web traffic.
AT&T's cable modem service "Uploading" is limited to 256Kbps, but as you can see that is still almost 5 to 10 times faster than a 56K modem.
Since I have had @home, the only interuption in service was at the start when the modem was installed. The could not get the service started due to a mix up at the home office. It took almost 24hours before I could start using the modem, which was frustrating, but well worth the wait. The service only cost's $40 per month, which might sound like a lot, but figure this: Most ISP's (for those with regular modems) charge between $19.00 to $25.00 a month for unlimited access. If you use the internet a lot, like I do, a second phone line will cost an average (in my area) of $15.00 per month. So in total you may already be paying close to $40 per month anyway. Even if you are paying only $20 per month, by doubling that amount for the Cable service, you are multiplying your speed of access by over 100 times.
Do yourself a favor and get up to Speed with a Cable modem.
