| aurigus's Full Review: AT&T@home |
When it works, it works great. That about sums up our feelings about AT&T@Home's cable modem services.
For the first month we (my roommates and I) had it, about 5 or 6 nights a week we would be without service. The lights on the modem would blink and we would come up with various ways of making it work (hey, maybe if we threaten to throw the modem off the balcony it would work; or maybe if we make it look at itself in the mirror and give it a pep talk it will work) Although these methods sometimes worked (seriously?!), sometimes we would go 10 hours or more without internet access. When we called the service number, they told us that our grid was pretty saturated and that they were working on the problem. Although they gave credit on our account, that still did not help much when you have a homework deadline, and the cable modem is out the entire night before and right until that time.
About a month after we got the cable modem and these problems, the situation got a little better. It would only go off about 1 night a week, which we could deal with. Now, (it's about 3 months after we got it)it seems pretty stable. It seems to cut out for no apparent reason for short amounts of time, but it is usually back on after 30 seconds to a minute. This is Ok for us so we are much happier with it. We got a friendly mail that they sent to everyone in town (State College, PA) that said everyone was getting a $40 credit for the trouble involved. I guess this is nice, because there isn't much else that could do.
As far as the speed goes, it is great. Most of the time the download speeds are restricted on the other end. If you use IRC you may have trouble finding a good server to connect to because .home.com is banned from many. My only other complaint is that you only connect one computer for the $40 base fee. If you want to add IPs for extra computers (i believe you can get 3 or 5) it's an extra $5 a month per IP. It would be nice if there were 3 IPs included in the base fee as I hear other services have. This would alleviate the need for a connection sharing machine, extra network card, and possibly a hub if you have more than one computer.
For the speed the price is good. Support is ok, although when the network people came out for the people complaining of frequent disconnects they really had no clue as to what was going on. The extra IPs would be nice too. However, all in all a great product.
