Let's get right to the point. If you ever download anything
bigger than 100Kb (a large picture) get this service if you
can. It is not available in all areas, and it's about $40
bucks a month. I can't honestly complain about anything else.
If you are used to using a 28.8 or 56.6 you will stare in
disbelief for several days, trust me. This is one fast connection.
My typical 56K modem would transfer at best 5k per second.
The cable modem routinely transfers at 100k per second and
I have seen it hit 250k per second. The speed is affected
by high traffic times but it still smokes.
Another big advantage of cable modems is your phoneline's
freedom. You will never tie up the phone again. This also
means that there is no need to use a dial-up connection and
listen to stupid modem noises. You are always connected. To me,
these factors offset a big chunk of the extra cash you pay to
have @Home service.
If you only use the internet for email and occasional surfing,
don't bother spending $40 a month. But if you ever download
anything, plan to watch streaming video, or get depressed
waiting endlessly for graphic-intensive sites to load,
this is for you.
Ok, once in a while the email can act up, and transfer speed
can vary significantly. However, even at it's slowest, this modem
will make you chuckle at your 56K. Overall, this is the best deal
out there. And you will never want to let go of your cable modem.....
never.
