| GasJocket214's Full Review: Adelphia PowerLink |
I have had a 56k modem for God knows how long. To say the least I was sick and tired of it. 56k just wasn’t getting the job done for me. Between the massive downloading that I do and just visiting certain web pages, 56k was to slow, so I decided to get a cable modem. I have heard how super fast cable is and I wanted to try it out for myself. So what I did was search around for the best deal that I could find. I looked at many different services, and it took me about a week to finally come across Adelphia.
The offer was too good to be true. The deal was a complete package, and it would only be $40 a month. I got the first month free, a free modem, free installation, and a free mini PC camera. I guess you can see how I couldn’t pass up this deal. Anyway, the day finally came when it was supposed to be installed. The guy showed up on time and he was very helpful. So far so good. Actually the service is still pretty decent, but the deal wasn’t as sweet as I thought it would be.
Pros
The pros definitely outweigh the cons of this service, but there still are a lot of cons. First I will talk about the pros. First of all, you can surf the Internet and download at blazing speeds (most of the time.) (I will further explain this in the cons section.) Another great feature is that being online doesn’t take up your phone line. I love that feature, because before when I had my 56k modem, I would be on for hours at a time and the line would always be busy. This way people that are trying to call me will never get a busy signal, and now they wont have to wait to get ahold of me.
Like I said before you can download at blazing speeds. When you download songs off Napster the speeds suffer slightly because usually the people that you try to download off of don’t have good connections, or their connections aren’t as good as yours. When you download a regular file it usually downloads at about 40k/s-100k/s.
Another great feature is that you are always online. That’s right, you never will get another busy signal again in your life! All that you have to do is turn your computer on and double-click on the Internet explorer icon and then you are online! It’s a lot faster then a dial up modem and a lot more convenient. The modem itself is small and doesn’t get in the way at all.
After reading all of these good things about the Adelphia modem/service you were probably almost about ready to get on the phone and order it right now, but whatever you do don’t order it quite yet, at least not until you read about the Cons.
Cons
Just like any other thing that sounds good there is a downside to it. This is no exception. You saw me use the term “blazing speeds” a lot in the upper portion of this review and it is true, but not 100% of the time. Sometimes you will not be so fortunate as to get “blazing speeds” because too many people are online. If you didn’t already know this, the speed of your cable Internet is based on how many people are using the same service as you. With Adelphia’s new promotion a lot of people will be getting the service which is bad for you because it will slow your speeds down dramatically.
In the pros section I said that you would never have to dial up a modem to get onto the Internet, which is true. In its substitution you will have to reset the modem about 5 times a day. Well, maybe not 5 times but at least twice. This happens because when you are doing a lot of things and a lot of people are on, the modem overflows with information and it basically freezes, what that means for you is this: you have to get out a paperclip, unfold it and stick it in the tiny hole on the back of the modem to reset it. (Which gets very tedious after a while.)
After reading the cons to this service you might want to think twice about getting it. Remember it might sound like a sweet deal, but always remember to check out everything about a product before you buy it. Thank you for reading and, if you have any further questions then please leave a comment and I will try to answer it as best as I can.
