| BucthFL's Full Review: Winfire FreeDSL |
Winfire has ceased operations & has filed for bankruptcy as of February 28, 2001!!
I have had my DSL service with Winfire now for the past 2 months. I have experienced both the good times with them & the bad times. But, since DSL is still relatively new I can understand how sometimes it can go down & the problems they can have with it. I have read other opinions from sites like Epinions as well as DSL Reports & there is always people that will like the service & others that will not. You can not expect everyone to like the same thing all the time.
I have been using Winfire's DSL now since late December & from the past 2 months experience I have had with it, I am not complaining. I get great download speeds which usually averages over 1.2 during the day or night. The upload speed I average a 200 kbps which for me I don't mind since I rarely uploading anything. Their e-mail seems to be buggy a lot! Sometimes you can get into it ok & read your e-mail & send e-mail & at other times you can't even log into it to even check your e-mail. Until they make their e-mail available by POP3 I don't intend to use it or I'll use it very rarely. If your a gamer I wouldn't suggest that you use Winfire as your DSL provider because of their toolbar that needs to be up & running on your computer monitor in order to surf the internet. That is how you log onto their DSL service. You have to launch their toolbar & sign on before you can surf the internet. This feature is kind of in the way since it takes up a small part of your computer screen. If you have AOL you might also encounter some problems when using Winfire. Sometimes you won't get a constant connection with them. Easiest thing to do is go into your control panel & your system properties & disable AOL's dial up adapter. After doing this I had no problem signing onto Winfire.
I use all my instant messengers & have no problem with them. But, because Winfire has some ports blocked you can't send or receive files through the instant messengers. But, you can send & receive files you download or upload through an e-mail. This feature I hate & was told by a Winfire technical representative will be resolved before the summer.
Even with the up & downs I have listed in this article about Winfire I am happy with their service. I get great download speed & haven't had much downtime either. Most of the downtime I have encountered has not been with Winfire, but with my local phone company & their central office. So, you can't pin the blame on Winfire for that. I am very satisfied with their DSL service as of now & will continue to use it especially with how much cheaper they are than other DSL companies.
