I've been earning for high speed internet access since I was born
(though I only started using computers in high school).
Frustrated by the snail-like modems, I anxiously waited arrival of cable internet to Saint
Louis. My dreams came true in summer of 98, when I was able to join the beta testing team
for Charter Communications.
The installation was rocky - but it was because of problems on my side. My floppy drive picked
that day to fail and I ended up rigging an unusual contraption, which used floppy controller
from one computer and power supply from another.
Anyway, once we got diskettes working, the rest of installation went smooth.
The cable guy left and I for the next few weeks I was lost to the
outside world - I was enjoying the bliss of Cable Modem.
What can I say about it ? The download speeds are so high, sometimes I
thought it was all a fake and the files I am getting off the Internet are
actually stored somewhere on my hard drive. But the reality was undeniable -
I had high speed access!
My cable modem had single drawback - because my area was not wired for '2
way communications', I had to use regular USR modem for uploading. It also
meant that I had to dialup and wait the usual 20-25 seconds when I wanted to
get online.
Oh, yeah, one more hitch - the Cable Modem connection center software
sometimes as flaky.
However, other than that, I've spend a wonderful year with cable internet
access - right until the day ADSL came to town. But that's another story.
