When I had my first computer given to me by a dear friend I had no idea what a wonderful world she was opening up to me and my family. It was an older Apple and I had no idea what in the world I was doing, but I just kept plugging along and learning. To say it was slow would be a huge understatement!
My daughters had talked about being online and kept encouraging me to just click on things and not be afraid. I had always heard people talking about virus’s and crashing their computers so I, of course, thought that it would take just one wrong click by me to totally disable that old machine.
I loved the fact that I could I M with my daughter who lived across the country from me. It kept me in daily contact with her and what was happening with her family. Of course I M’ing with that old Apple was a very difficult process and I couldn’t type or send anything while they were typing! But I was in heaven…a 28K modem was link to the outside world!
It didn’t take me long to realize that there were faster machines out there. That not everyone was having the same difficulty that I was having in opening a web page or chatting with friends. I watched the ads and my mailbox for our tax return and off we went to get a new computer. We bought a Compaq Presario with a 17” monitor. Suddenly a whole new world opened up. I very rarely tried to open a web page with our Apple but now with the 56K modem it felt as if I could just fly around the web. WOW
We of course joined lists and newsgroups and put more things in our favorites than we could ever remember to look at and downloaded games and anything else that looked really good and our poor little Compaq started to slow down. Nothing awful mind you, but taking a little longer to open a page and things automatically running when I had no clue as to what they were. Well since I’m still not, what you would call computer literate, I decided we should do the next best thing to a clean out and get a…… Cable Modem!
Having just moved, and having to get hooked for cable TV we called our local service, Charter and were very pleased with what they had to say.
Our scheduled time for TV hook up was set and he was here right on time, not something that I am used, and was a very pleasant and polite young man. He spent time showing me how to use this new gigantic remote and then gave us some coupons for some free pay per view movies. I was very happy with the service so we decided that we could trust their service for our cable modem also. Once again, he was right on time (a nice perk of living in a small town) and very pleasant and very quick to get us hooked up.
I am once again saying WOW! It is so wonderful to be hooked up to the internet all of the time. To be able to just hop on for a minute and check my mail (although I’ve pretty much stayed on since getting it connected yesterday lol) or play a game or two at funbug and not have to worry about getting connected back online again. Another huge advantage is that our telephone line is now free for someone to call. Having the phone line tied up whenever we were on the computer was really and inconvenience, and made being on for long periods of time impossible. Having the cable modem rather than having to have two telephone lines is really the least expensive way to go. By the time we would pay for an ISP and and extra line, I believe we would actually end up paying more.
I am not sure of all of the particulars of different modems…or computers for that matter. I like to be able to just plug things in and go, and after the cable guy from Charter Pipeline installed our Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem that is exactly what I have been able to do. If you would like more information on the modem itself they have a website at: www.surfboard.com for those who are able to understand how and why this all works.
Something else that I appreciate in our Charter cable modem is the fact that it has a sleep mode, the same way our computer does so that it doesn’t have to be always on. Our daughters monitor blew up after constantly running and I sure know that I don’t want that to happen.
Well, this isn’t a review for those who know a lot about computers and modems…but I have a feeling that there are a lot more out there that are like me and don’t have a lot of knowledge about the inner workings, but love their computer and want to know the fastest way to use it.
