Cox's Crappy Excite@Home

Written: Aug 26 '00
Pros:supposedly fast
Cons:2 many people on 1 bandwidth, down alot, unhelpful

When I first got my cable modem, I absolutely loved it. At that time it was contracted by TCI cable, but was in the process of selling to AT&T. Which was fine, I never had a problem with TCI or AT&T when they had my cable modem. Then good'ole Cox Communications took over. I had Cox for my cable company when I lived in New Orleans. I complained to them daily how crappy service was.... That was then. Not much has changed since.

Since Cox took over the @Home services in the Baton Rouge area, Ive had NOTHING but problems. I'll list them (if I can remember them all)

Firstly. Noone ever informed me that when I moved my ENTIRE acct would change. I had to have a new account set up and I lost my email. (without my knowledge or consent) The weird thing was, I was in my new apartment for almost 2 months before I tried to check my mail one day and found my acct. did not exist anymore. So after being without service for 7 days, they FINALLY gave me my previous acct. info back. The acct. they had set up for me (my supposed new one) didn't work at all. Never did. Needless to say I was issued a credit after talking to 9 operators and 3 manager / supervisors.

Secondly, and this is the good one. I come home from work one day to find my RF Link light blinking. Apparantly my service had been disconnected. So I call to find out why, and apparantly my bill hadn't been paid. Funny, I know I sent it in a week early.... (And this is the very next day after I got part one resolved) So after talking to 20 or so people (literally that many if not more) going through the service route and being told I'd have to have a technician come out and replace my modem (none of the morons who worked there noticed I was disconnected for non-pay) This is the real kicker here.... My bill was due the 18th of the month, it was the 21st and I was disconnected for non-pay. Come to find out my check had been posted on the 16th, 2 days before my payment was due. You tell me what's wrong with that picture. Disconnected for paying early?? At this point, I had already ordered my DSL (It will be here soon thank god) (sidenote, my service was out for 4 days with this little Cox screw-up)

That's just some of my bad experience with them. I won't bother to get into detail of how much "The mail server is not responding, it must be down, please notify your system administrator" or the 80 billion people packed onto 1 bandwidth (which makes my modem as slow as a dialup) I'm paying 40 bucks a month for a cable modem that isn't fast unless it's 3am and everyone else in Baton Rouge is sleeping not using the modem.

So needless to say I'm not very happy with Cox, they're not a good company and they're really unhelpful with any type of service problems. If you're looking for high-speed connectivity Cox is NOT the way to go, pursue a DSL it's worth it over Cable.
