The first time I downloaded a 10.3MB file in 38sec I fell in love with my new cable modem from COX.com. I was at first hesitant to pay $55 for Internet access (which in my area we get cable TV included), but I have no regrets.
The cable guys came exactly on time ready to work, which made me really surprised right from the start. I originally wanted the modem to be hooked up to a computer running Linux Mandrake 7.1, but they said that they could not support it. So I let them install it on my Windows2000 computer, which they did. The guy didn’t seam to be very fluent with Windows2000, and had to ask me many questions. I think I ended up doing more of the installation than he did. Well we got it to work after a few hours, and he packed up and left. Leaving behind a whole bunch of useless software.
I decided after he left that I would go ahead and install it onto my Linux box, just to see how easy it would be. Nothing! Took maybe 20min and I was surfing at top speeds. Now I share the Internet connection through that computer with several other test machines in my computer room. Working great for the past three weeks. I will be soon writing an opinion on how well Linux Mandrake 7.1 runs as a gateway/firewall PC.
I sometimes get slower download times at peak hours of the day, but I average about 1500Kbps according to www.2wire.com's bandwidth meter. My suggestion to anyone using a cable modem is to download some software to protect you computer from hackers like "ZoneAlarm" (available at download.com), and have a up-to-date anti-virus running at all times!
