USAA/Earthlink the way to go

Pros: Reliable connection, reasonable rates, not AOL
Cons: not broadband
The Bottom Line: If you're a USAA member, it's a no-brainer. If not, I'd recommend reading some other epinions.

Our local ISP (enteract) was bought out by 21st Century, who was then bought out by RCN Chicago. As we watched our connection speeds go down the drain, we began looking for alternatives.
Unfortunately, there are no DSL, Cable, or Wireless high-speed connections available yet in our area, and we're not willing to shell out the dough for Satellite. So I gave USAA/Earthlink a call. I'm afraid if you're not a member of USAA, you might not be able to sign up, but if you are, read on...
At 13.95 a month (if you use USAA/Sprint for long distance, 15.95 if you don't), it was 30% cheaper than RCN Chicago, so I figured with the 15 day free trial, no set-up fee, and money-back program it was worth a try.
Boy have we been happy! One of the best features of the USAA program is the great service. They give you two special phone numbers, one for customer service and one for tech support. It bumps USAA members to the front of the queue 24/7. I've called a few times, and every time I get a person within 10 seconds - quite a change from what I was used to.
Our connection speed has been a consistent 50666bps, even during peak evening hours. So although it's not a broadband connection, for me it seems to be the next best thing. If you're a USAA member, SWITCH NOW! If not, I imagine Earthlink is still a pretty good option, I'm just not able to speak to how fast your calls will be answered. The connection speed should still be good, and just about anything is better than AOL.
