| jbalke's Full Review: Everyone's Internet (Houston) |
Whether it is the $10 per month dial-up, $40 per month DSL or $20 per month hosting, I've used just about everything EV1 has to offer. I've even used their $99 per month Rackshaq.net servers.
Their dial-up and DSL services have always been a relative bargain. For dial-up, you cannot beat the price or the guarantee. It's no wonder they've grown so fast. DSL is moderately priced but not that much lower than the rest.
For service, they are fairly reliable. They keep their site updated with basic issues and respond to problems pretty quickly. Their uptime for DSL is good and their dial-up connectivity is above average. Even the hosting went pretty well.
The majority of problems I had with EV1 stemmed from the poor customer service and tech support. There were times when I attributed it to their rapid growth, but mostly it felt like they hired people who really didn't know what they were doing.
I've often had clients who were hosting their sites with EV1 or leaving EV1 and it has always been nearly impossible to resolve domain issues with them. They don't clear out their servers when a client leaves which often times means that EV1 users (of which there are a TON in Houston) end up getting nothing when trying to reach a domain once hosted with EV1.
The same type of thing screws up DNS listings and I always seem to be calling customer service with the same problem - getting them to clear out the old site and release the DNS information.
What is worse is finding someone that understands those issues and who isn't out to lunch or in a meeting. Even when I chat with their tech support people via their ultra-slow Java chat or my IRC Client (preferred method), I get the sense that the guy who can fix the problem is always doing something else.
Once, a server needed re-booting for one of my clients and the tech told me that it would be a few hours because their servers weren't in the same location and the only guy who had a car to get over to the other side of town where their servers were located was in a meeting until after lunch! Seriously!
Overall, I'd say that they have many of the same problems most ISP's and web hosts face. They have grown very quickly - maybe too quickly - and, as a result, their customers have suffered mainly from poor customer service and an overworked (and likely underpaid) tech support staff.
