FamilyConnect no longer offers dial-up service. They've switched to a filtering-only solution provider - and they've got the best filter available! Their filter is powered by a spin off product they've created called the "S4F" filter. The "S4F" filter is available via the web site "www.s4f.com" as well - a little confusing, but helpful to understand this.

FamilyConnect offers an extremely fast and effective Internet filtering solution that installs on your PC - working with virtually ANY browser including AOL! Their software installs on each workstation (computer) in your home or office. The software, once installed, checks whether a web site is "acceptable" or not before displaying it's contents in your browser. It does this by contacting a "S4F" server and determining within a split-second, whether the site is pornography-free (illegal activity also filtered) or not. If it passes, it is displayed, if not, a notice is displayed instead and the browser window remains blank.
The software is an excellent solution for DSL/cable users because it doesn't slow down the Internet connection at all the way proxy-based solutions do. Their server is updated daily with new "bad" sites and therefore updating the software is not necessary.
As a web/Windows developer, the fact that this software doesn't interfere with my development environment at home is a definite plus. I've got the software installed on ALL our machines at home for a monthly fee of just under five bucks for an unlimited number of protected machines! A very good deal and very effective.
They filter primarily adult content (pornography, "hate speech sites", bomb making instructions, etc.) and the filter is effective enough that it doesn't filter reference material sites that include sexual content of an informational nature. Their list is "human-edited" so sites aren't blocked indiscriminately. The software also doesn't disable chat software (like MSN and AOL Messenger) and technical or family oriented newsgroups.
A very effective, fast, and seamless product. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to offer a safe-surfing environment at home or at their office.
