| alexaugot's Full Review: Mindspring |
I've been using the internet for a long time now -- about 10 years. The internet today has come a long way from the internet of the past. I can remember when the Internet was nothing but a telnet browser, and a copy of Lynx, all running of the data collected by my super fast 2400bps modem. Today, dial up modems are up to 56Kpbs, and most high speed solutions ( cable, DSL, satellite ) are much, much faster.
With the explosion of bandwidth, and traffic on the internet, ISP's have been forced to constantly upgrade their systems. Adding to that, the sounds of new users to flock to the internet everyday, its no wonder that many ISP's have problems with busy signals.
One ISP I've found that doesn't have a problem with busy signals is Mindspring. I got Mindspring back in December of 1999, after I ditched Concentric.net's service. I decided to go with Mindspring for 2 reasons - 1) They are a nationally known ISP, and 2) They offered me 3 months free ( a perk that is still being offered right now ).
When I first signed on to Mindspring, I was a bit skeptical. I had been screwed by some ISP's in the past ( Ziplink, Erols, MassEd.Net to name a few ), but I was willing to give it a try. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of service I was given. When I dialed up, it went through. Almost NO busy signals, ever! The connection quality was good, almost always connecting at 56000bps. I can't comment on Mindspring's other features, such a personalized home page, or install CD, because I chose not use them.
Its not all great though... Mindspring is hardly ever busy, but when it is, get prepared to wait. One night, a week ago, I had to try over 20 times to connect. Again, this is rare, but it can be a pain in the butt when you just NEED to send a e-mail. The price ( 19.95 per month ) is also a little much, considering many ISP's are charging much lower rates.
All in all though, Mindspring is a great value, perhaps the best ISP out there. If anyone knows of a better one in the Boston area, toss me an e-mail. I'm always looking for something better
