Well, I've been deprived of broad band ever since I graduated college, and that was two years ago!!!! It was extreme difficult to make the transition back to regular 56.6k modems after being spoiled by Road Runner for 3 years.
Not to be off-topic, but I've realized that most companies sell 33.6k services and mask them as "UP TO" 56.6k speed.
Anyway, after my Telocity DSL "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" disappointment, I tried to sign up for Bell Atlantic InfoSpeed DSL. That will be another review itself. Bell Atlantic DSL was not available in my area either, surprise surprise. After all that I just gave up on getting broad band. It's my own fault to live in an area of New Jersey where speedy internet connection is impossible to get.
I never even considered RCN's cable connection because my old land lord had it and it was only one way. Apparently the cable lines in my area are too old to support uploading and downloading at the same time. So I stuck to my 33.6k connection for two whole years. Then a month ago I got a flyer in the mail about RCN offering their cable modem service for 19.99 till the end of the year. I figure, why not, so I finally signed up for it.
Well it took them about three weeks to get me connected, so basically I only have two months of 19.99 service left this year, then it's back up to 39.99.
I wasn't home for the installation, but I wanted them to hook up my boyfriend's computer to it as well. I didn't know if it was possible to have two computers connected at the same time with one way cable modems. But apparently the service guy thought it was, so he connected my boyfriend's computer as well. As it turn out, it didn't work, so now I have to call them and return the other modem.
So far the connection seems to be ok, NOTHING compare to all my other friend's cable/dsl connections. I download at about 10 to 20k, which is NOTHING like what they advertise. Still, it's a big improvement over my old 33.6k connection where I was downloading at 2 or 3k.
There are promises of a two way cable connection in December. I really doubt it'll happen given the fact that I've been told "It'll be two way soon" ever since I moved here two years ago.
So unless you have no other broad band choices besides RCN, and you absolute CAN'T live without a faster internet connection, I would say save your 20 bucks and wait till RCN decide to roll out two way modems.
