| alyssa01's Full Review: RCN Cable |
I had never had a cable modem before last summer. My old dial-up, a 56K internal US Robotics modem, seemed to be serving me just fine. Alas, my housemates, sick of missing phone calls due to my internet IV, insisted that we upgrade. In short order we had called and requested to be connected through RCN to the ever-growing world of cable lines.
A full month later, they finally got around to serving us. It seemed well worth the wait, however, when the four of us all went online at the same time and celebrated with a massive no-holds-barred game of Quake. I was in top fragging shape, with 5 kills to my credit, when everything froze. It seemed that the line had crashed. Now, as a modem-user, I'm fairly used to that, but my housemates went wild.
"I'll kill the--"
"Not if I kill them fir--"
"You'll have to get in line!"
A phone call to their support line got us nowhere. Perhaps they had left for the day. All right. We're all rational, adult, human beings. We can wait. A full twenty-three hours later, at 4:00 PM EST, we finally got through. We were informed that some tower somewhere had done something and some other thing had dome something else. They were working on the problem and thought that the network would be back up in a few days. We all nodded sagely at each other, trying to look like we understood all of that.
"The gazooble tower. Of course. *laughter* I should have guessed."
"You know, I thought it might be the gazooble tower. But then I thought that maybe the fanoorgen dooble foober had crashed. That seemed likely."
"Yeah, but didn't she say that RCN uses a fanoorgen twooble foober?"
And so on. Once we realized that we were as clueless as RCN seemed to be, we called back. This time, in much more clipped tones, we were informed that there was a 'situation' and that we would just have to sit tight.
Oh, eventually it got fixed. And then everything worked well. Until something else broke. We had major problems nearly all summer, and I cannot honestly say that they've gotten any better (after that summer I moved out and switched back to my good ol' modem).
I admit that this epinion contains little information that one could obtain simply by going to the web site for RCN cable (www.rcn.com), but I wanted to share my experiences with the system and its pitfalls. Enjoy!
My advice is to stick with your dial-up until forced to give over. I know I will.
