| neilbert's Full Review: RCN Cable |
My girlfriend and I moved across town, and the nice folks (heh) at Verizon told us we couldn't take our DSL service with us. So we shopped around for an alternate broadband provider. RCN was pretty much the only other option, since the other cable company had said it would be "about three years" before they began wiring for the internet. I had used RCN's dial-up before, and while the connection was good, the service was... well, horrific. When you tell the guy on the phone how to fix the problem and half an hour later he admits you're right, that's bad. So I was a little nervous about it. We decided tho, that for $120/mo, with phone, cable TV and internet service, we'd give it a try, as we were paying closer to $150/mo for those services before. Signing up and Installation went without a hitch. Let me break down the services individually for reviewing:
Internet via cablemodem: we've had one outage in the past 7 months. Fixed within four hours. Speed is good, connectivity is better.
Cable television: includes 5 HBOs and 2 Cinemax. Total of about 80 channels. My only complaint is that I can't find a way to delete channels I don't receive - for instance, I don't subscribe to Showtime, I'd like to be able to delete it from the channel listing in my box. Occasionally the picture does some goofy things like get really dark or a sudden burst of static, but I've found that to happen with all cable TV companies.
Phone: all of eastern Mass is local. 508, 617, 978 and 781, along with whatever new area codes they're adding next month, are all local calls. Long distance is 9 cents per minute, but we don't call long distance to often (our average bill is 3-5 dollars!). The only problem we had here was that we could make calls but not receive them for the first few days. RCN blamed Verizon, Verizon blamed RCN. Typical. We called RCN and it was fixed.
Overall, we're quite happy with RCN. I have had few occasions to call their service center, but when I did, they were very nice and the problem got solved. If you have the option, I recommend you check them out.
