Pros: None. Not kidding, absolutely none.
Cons: Terrible customer service. Billing nightmares. Installation problems.
The Bottom Line: Do NOT use RCN, no matter what the price. If you do, keep their # on speed dial because you will use it often.

From start to finish, my experience with RCN was horrible. I could go on for pages and pages, but I will try to keep this short and highlight the major problems:
1. Installation...I took an afternoon off of work, and they never showed up. On hold for a while and they figured out that the RCN sales dept. canceled the order, without letting me know. Oops. On top of this, they lost all of my paperwork, so I had to set up another appt. with a sales rep. to do the paperwork (again). Then I could set up an installation appt. It took over 3 months to get service.
2. Billing....Despite our account being up to date, I twice received notices threatening disconnection for not paying. They claimed we owed over $1400.00 for telephone usage. Our phone bill was never over $50.00 per month and was always current. When I called to inquire, the customer service rep. insisted that we owed this money. She kept telling me that I didn't understand their billing system. I called back again and explained the problem to somebody else, who also insisted that we owed them $1400.00. After a few more exchanges, she agreed to look into this after I faxed her the statements. One statement from RCN claimed the $1400., the other claimed $41. Upon research, she determined $1400 was indeed an RCN error.
3. Canceling Service....I canceled service in March (which was another hassle), but RCN continued to bill me right through June. When I called to find out why they wanted to know why I hadn't paid them yet. I told them I canceled service a few months ago. It took them a while, but they did find a record of the phone call when I canceled. Nobody could figure out why they continued to bill us. Transferred, put on hold a few more times. Got in touch with somebody to fix my account, but he couldn't send out the final statement until the next billing cycle, which was in a few weeks. All of this took 1 hour on the phone.
4. Returning equipment....How do you return the equipment? Well, if you reserve a four hour time block, they will come and pick it up. I have taken enough days off of work for this company, so I asked where I could return the equipment. The listed a bunch of offices and each one I picked had either closed or did not accept returns. Okay, they can send out a mailer to my house and I can mail the equipment back. That sounds fair to me. Three weeks later, nothing has arrived in the mail. I still have the equipment and I don't know how to return it to them. They are supposed to send out another mailer.
Overall, I have never dealt with anything like this. Every single aspect of their service was horrible. I literally have spent hours and hours and hours on the phone with this company, and they have never straightened anything out. They have a different dept. for all aspects of their company, so you end up with at least 4 transfers per phone call. I had no choice but to switch to satellite TV and go back to the old phone company. I would not use RCN if they gave it all away for free.
