Pros: After reading many of the reviews I have seen the major complaint as of RCN's service is the customer service/tech service. I have had no problems with the tech staff. Most times they can help target your problem and fix your problem.
24/7 tech support (email support is normally very fast with in 2 days tops!)
For example, I have just bought a new computer and it had Windows XP on it. Well I know nothing about windows XP. I tried to install a patch which I thought I needed to make my printer run and well needless to say I could not connect to the internet anymore. (This is all 2 hours into having the computer and internet running) I called the tech support at RCN and at first he did not know exactly how to go about dealing with my problem because I had no place to return in time (XP feature) to restore the computer. Well he went through a couple of check list questions and found a problem. To cut the story shorter he went through for about 20 mins. Guiding me through all the settings to fix what I had screwed up. Needless to say I would have never known to do everything he told me. And that is just one example of many that RCN has saved my butt in getting the internet up and running after I mess up.
This also shows that RCN is up to date with Windows XP (internet explorer) new technology.
Connected as soon as your computer starts up. I love this feature. No more waiting to dial for 5 mins. on AOL. And even at peak hours never have had any problems connecting.
I have only had 2 instances where the internet was not available in a year and a half. And the internet was not down more than 12 hours. I use the internet at least 1-2 hours per day plus my sister also uses the internet so the computer is used hard. This shows the reliability of RCN's service.
Since I live near RCN's service area I signed up for the Cable modem service and telephone plan for about $80 a month. This saved our family about an estimated $15 per month plus included the faster internet service. We could have signed up for the premium TV service for about $20 more per month which would have been a steal but our family is a sports family and don't have much use for 20 more channels we probably won't watch.
Cons: I hate to use this as a con but sometimes the connection speeds lack. I download from kazaa frequently and sometimes no matter how many times you re-connect or restart your computer you can't improve your max download speed over 25 kb/s. That speed still makes 56k users drool but when you are used to speeds up near the 100's, 30kb/s seems slow.
The biggest complaint is the service men never showed up on the date we had scheduled. I was livid to say the least. This was all fixed and they gave us $20 credit on our bill. So it wasn't all bad in the long run.
Summary: Great package plans! RCN isn't just a cable modem service provider. I know it sounds like an advertisement but it's good to know if you live in the area you can save even more $$$ on other deals. Customer service has always been good to me. I hate to hear other people have had problems in the past. Since RCN is not a huge nation wide provider this leaves the customer being able to connect to tech support in minutes with any problems (which all my problems are my stupid fault!)
Great service to consider.
