Hi There,
I used to have a DSL line and thought it was ok, nothing special by no means but it was ok. I then decided to get Cable, and I will admit that cable occasionally can also be slow at times, but it is mostly due to the bottlenecking of where you are getting the information from.
When I did direct transfers through DLS and when I did them through cable and both were through the RDC, I have seen the difference, the light if you will.
Let me explain the difference and why I decided to stick with cable internet service.
DSL lines are restricted to about 1MHz of bandwidth and that is shared bandwidth between voice and data (since it is in effect a phone line), Cable however has dedicated frequencies for data, voice and video, they have about a 750MHz range and with this you can watch TV, talk on the phone, and surf the net without impacting the performance of any of the services.
In conclusion I found the cable modem to be a virtual network rather than an actual modem that lets you use your coax line to have a 24 hour connection to the net the HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax) networks have more flexibility, expandability and just have more capacity than any other wired alternative such as DSL, I find that Cable beats DSL on pricing and performance, cable is also run on a redundant network meaning if one line fails the service will automatically reroute around the damaged area and continue working.
I have also found that DSL pricing will often not include the cost of the ISP's Internet access and features such as E-Mail, not to mention that the farther you are from the central office the more you may have to pay, and the further you are from the central office the slower connections you will also get.
I am not knocking the DSL that is provided by Sympatico I am just letting you know the truths about DSL service, I found the DSL provided by Sympatico to be "ok" their tech support needs to hire more people in my humble opinion to cut down on wait times but other than that I found them somewhat reliable.
