After spending needless money on AOL for months, I accidently discovered free internet service providers via web search. Since September 1999, I had downloaded and tried up to 11 free ISPs (including NetZero, AltaVista, freewwweb, iFreedom, address.com, etc.). As far as getting free internet access without intrusive advertisment banners which in most cases you can't eliminate, I found Worldspy.com to be highly desirable. This lack of banners allows more screen space and thus allow a more pleasurable internet experience. The extensive opinion poll prior to joining is a small price to pay to enjoy free internet access. Worldspy.com may not be for beginners; if you need internet hand-holding use AOL. However, if you feel you can't wean yourself away from AOL just yet, go to the AOL start screen and click the SETUP button and then select the last option to access AOL via ISP/LAN connection. This will avoid using AOL local access numbers (which I've had numerous hair-pulling sudden disconnections, i.e. America-Off-Line) Which means you must access Worldspy.com or any other ISP before clicking the AOL icon.
If you are successful with and it works for you, then don't forget to go to AOL Billing and change that status to ISP/LAN connection so you get a $10 per month discount on AOL (because you are no longer using their local access network).
Please be sure that the local access numbers provided by Worldspy.com as well as other ISPs are truly local (ask your local telephone company for this information). Worldspy.com works quite well for the New York Metropolitan Area as well as most other ISPs. Good Luck and Good Surfing!
