Pros:great for beginners and experts alike, games, adaptable
Cons:none
The Bottom Line: Easy to install and easy to use. ^5 Maevis Beacon
My neighbor recently got a computer. This gentleman is in his young 50's and knows nothing about computers or even how to type. When he first got his computer, he was somewhat happy to one finger it, but after visiting me and seeing how fast I can type and accurately, he has made it his mission to learn to type.
That is a wonderful goal.
So as a Christmas gift this year, I purchased Maevis Beacon Teaches Typing Ver. 9. Then I installed it on his computer for him. Then I installed it on my computer for me.
Installation
Installation was simple. Point and click with the mouse and let the system do the work.
Running
I did find for the program to run successfully, the CD needs to be in the CD-Rom. On my system the most I can do is take a typing test, the teaching programs apparently run off the CD.
Own Pace
I did notice that each lesson is set to each individual's own learning pace. That is a really nice feature to have, especially if you have several people using the same system.
Also, there are typing tests that will tell you your speed and your accuracy.
In addition to the individualized lessons, there are games that you can play while typing to break up the monotony of learning.
When in the lessons, there is a table that shows a keyboard and two see through hands. This table shows where the correct finger placement would be. The feature I like about this is the hands can be turned off. I do find the hands distracting.
Also, there is a selection of musical styles that can be played while you are typing your lessons or doing a typing test. Music from the Blues to Rock. And Classical in between. It is nice to have this feature.
Typing Tests
I have found this the most beneficial to me. Since I already know how to type, I have found that by taking the occasional typing test has helped me to maintain my speed and accuracy when typing. Also, it is a good refresher course on all letters and punctuations and finger placement.
Cost
I found the Maevis Beacon Teaches Typing Ver. 9 at Office Depot for $10.00.
Final Thoughts
I give the Maevis Beacon Teaches Typing Ver. 9 a 5 because of it's ease of use. Also, the lessons can be tailored for specific needs and the typing tests are a great way to stay in practice with speed and accuracy.
Also, by purchasing this CD and giving it to my neighbor, he can learn to type on his own time, at his own pace without being embarrassed.
