Pros:Music, concept, activities
Cons:Printable Workbook disc did not work
The Bottom Line: This is a great educational tool for older preschoolers.
The first thing I do when we get new software for our kids is to try it out myself. I found two discs when I opened Dr. Seuss Preschool. Disc 1 is the kids’ disc with educational games. Disc 2 is the parents’ disc & is a “printable workbook” as they call it. It contains pages that can be printed for your child to practice letters & numbers with pencil & paper rather than on the computer. The pages are typical of Dr. Seuss with lots of bold colors & fun font & characters. Problem is, our disc 2 does not operate properly so I cannot view most of its pages.
I popped disc 1 into the drive & immediately fell in love with it:
-The music, sound effects, & visuals are fun, captivating & clear. Visuals are filled with color &, like the workbook, typical of Dr. Seuss.
-There are 3 skill levels for each activity. If you feel the activity is too easy or difficult you can change skill levels at any time or let your child work their way from the easiest skill level to the more difficult.
-Parents can check their child’s work by clicking on the progress button. There you can view how many lessons have been completed & the percentage of correct answers given. Pretty neat!
-Many educational areas are focused on in this software. On page 1 of the manual it lists “alphabet, numbers, counting, phonics, beginning reading skills, sorting, classifying, and much, much more”. Off the top of my head I can also think of rhyming, colors, & shapes. There are also additional activities that seem to me to be a fun way of practicing manipulation of a computer mouse.
We received Dr. Seuss Preschool as a Christmas gift in 1999 for our then 3 year-old son. It is designed for children ages 2-4 but he didn’t take to it right off the bat. It seemed that some of the activities were at his level while others were still too difficult. It wasn’t until he was 4 when he regularly began using this program on our computer. Now when he plays with Dr. Seuss Preschool it is VERY hard to tear him away! He is almost 5 & has benefitted from Dr. Seuss Preschool since he was a little over 4. We have another son who will be 3 next month but I haven’t even introduced him to the software. I personally think it is still over his head even though he is certainly no dummy! What I am trying to convey is that this is a wonderful educational software program for preschoolers as long as the child is closer to kindergarten than not.
