The Learning Company has done an outstanding job of introducing VERY small children to computer basics while teaching them to count, sing, and recognize colors. Reader Rabbit's Toddler begins with a colorful animated intro that is easily skipped by pressing any key. Your children will likely not allow you to skip the intro without pitching a fit. it is very colorful and fun.
Once inside the play area, your child can easily chose from several activities. To choose an activity, the mouse button must be clicked and that usually requires a parent. After you enter an activity area, however, your toddler can go it alone. The very smart programing activates various songs, features, matching games, etc... simply by moving the mouse in the generally correct direction. Even the simple and erratic back and fourth motion of most toddlers will keep the game moving.
The first activity I recommend for the smallest of toddlers is the "Bubble Castle" where simply moving the mouse around pops bubbles blown by a very cute "Bubble Dragon." Occasionally, a bubble will have a small animal inside and when popped, the animal climbs into the bubble castle. Once the castle is full (5 animals) the game pauses to count to 5. All of the other activities are equally cute and educational, this one is simply the most basic for the first timers.
I strongly endorse this program and so does my eighteen month old child. She has been fascinated and enjoyed playing with it sine about 13 months. We were so pleased that we bought the entire Reader Rabbit library and will introduce them to her as she grows in to them.
