Jesse82's Full Review: Apple Mac OS 10 Full Version (M7686LL/A)
Once in a while I find a need to run an old OS9 program, so I set my startup disk to that good old OS9 System folder and restart my iBook. It's like nostalgia watching that good old grey square with the blue face smiling at me as the progress bar slowly creeps it's way full. It's a bit like going back to your old high school, when you've been away at college. The way that everything looks the same as it always did, but in your eyes it's changed so much simply because of what you have seen since you left. First I notice all the rough textures on all the icons and fonts. Then I thrust my cursor down to the bottom edge of the screen to evoke the Dock, only to quickly realize it's not there. I poke my way through the hundreds of windows that clutter my screen as I search for the application I need. I start to notice things I never had before, such as the difficulty of sorting through the 30 or more control panels in my apple menu to find the one I want. Finally I open my application and begin to do whatever it was I had intended to do, when the program freezes. I move my cursor and click only to realize it does no good. Option, Command, Esc, and I force quit the program, again and the finder goes, finally a nice little bomb, and a restart button that never actually restarts the computer only freezes the cursor.
When you go back to high school, you'll notice the rust on the benches, and how small the halls are. How beat up the lockers are and how many of the desks are broken. You would have remained oblivious to that if you had never left. That's how OS9 looks to me now after I have used OSX for almost four months. I never realized how primitive it really was until now with my new hindsight. Now that my iBook hasn't had to be forced to restart since the last time I used OS9. Now that I'm setting up firewalls, ftp servers, and RAID arrays with so little difficulty. Now that I am finally learning to program computers for the very first time with the simplest tools I have ever found. This operating system has more power than we'll need, and more capabilities than we'll see used for years to come. For the longest time we Mac users have had the simplest, most easy to use computers. Recently we've had the highest quality, and fastest computers. And now we have the most powerful, most useable, and most stable computers. World domination is only a step away.
